First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest Welcomes Rev. Dr. John Buchanan as Theologian in Residence, Sept. 13 – Oct. 4
Lake Forest, Ill. – Sept. 3, 2015 – The Rev. Dr. John Buchanan, editor and publisher of The Christian Century magazine and former head Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, will be joining First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest as its Theologian in Residence.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Buchanan with us this fall as we embark on our year-long study of the Bible,” said Rev. Dr. Dave Bianchin, associate pastor for Adult Faith Formation. “We welcome everyone in the community to join us for Dr. Buchanan’s presentations. Known for his ability to connect the Bible with real life, Dr. Buchanan’s intellect, savvy and humor will challenge and inspire.”
The Theologian in Residence program begins on Sept. 13 and will be held every Sunday through Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian’s Fellowship Hall, 700 N Sheridan Road in Lake Forest. Dr. Buchanan will be giving talks on the “Foundations of Our Faith,” focusing on a different aspect each week:
- Sept. 13: In the Beginning, God
- Sept. 20: Veiled in the Flesh, the Godhead See, Hail the Incarnate Deity
- Sept. 27: Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound, that Saved a Wretch Like Me
- Oct. 4: Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be Done, On Earth
Along with his leadership at Fourth Presbyterian Church, Dr. Buchanan served as moderator of the 208th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and as a member of its General Assembly Council from 1996 through 1999. He is the author of A New Church for a New World, Being Church, Becoming Community, and Sermons for the City. He holds an A.B. in government from Franklin and Marshall College and an M.Div. from the University of Chicago Divinity School/Chicago Theological Seminary.
