First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest Blends Worship with Play for Children and Families at Playground Church

Playground Church

Lake Forest, Ill. – July 7, 2015 – There is nothing like playgrounds to children in summertime. These beacons of fun spark their imagination, get their sillies out and bond them together. At First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, the playground is also a place where children and their families can experience God.

For the last three years, First Presbyterian has been the only church in the area with Playground Church-a Sunday morning service at 10 a.m., held in the church playground at 700 N Sheridan Road in Lake Forest.

“Families want to be outdoors in the summer and they want to have time together,” says Rev. Amy Pagliarella, director of Children’s Faith Formation at First Presbyterian. “Rather than making families choose between church and family time, we bring them together.”

Unlike what many people think of in terms of dress for Sunday services, First Presbyterian also encourages families to come dressed for the playground. During Playground Church, the whole family is invited to worship God by swinging, sliding and playing, as well as through prayer, communion, singing and stories. All summer long, leaders will also tell popular children’s stories that illustrate the Christian faith. Alternatively, parents can join in traditional worship indoors while their children remain at Playground Church for a supervised Sunday school experience.

Playground Church will meet rain or shine. In case of inclement weather, Playground Church will meet around the “campfire” in First Presbyterian’s Fellowship Hall for storytelling, indoor games and activities.
